Sligo county is one of the 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland and one of the 32 counties in the island of Ireland. The name "Sligo" comes from the Irish word "Sligeach" which can be translated roughly as 'the place with a lot of shells' probably in reference to the large amount of shells that could be found at the mouth of the river as it flows into the sea.
The crest or coat of arms of Sligo has a boar's head which is said to represent the "Wild Boar of Benbulben" which appeared in the ancient Celtic romantic myth of Diarmuid and Gráinne. Black and white are the colours of the Sligo gaelic football team.
Sligo is located in the Western province of Connaught. There are three other provinces - Ulster in the north, Leinster in the East and Munster in the south. The symbol of Connaught is a sword and an eagle. This is quite apt as one of Sligo's best-loved attractions and a popular activity on our summer programme is Eagle-flying - a really brilliant attraction that brings the majesty of birds of prey and raptors to the general public.
